Article I Name
Section 1: The name of this organization shall be the Broward County Honor Society (amended March 31, 2015)

Section 1: The purpose of the organization shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to encourage a concern for character development, and to advance the work of the Honor Society among all Broward County Chapters.

Article III NHS Handbook
Section 1: No decision of the Broward County Honor Society shall conflict with policies that are contained in the National Honor Society handbook.

Article IV Membership
Section 1: Membership in the Broward County Honor Society shall be open to all Honor Society Chapters (Note: grades 10-12) and all Junior Honor Society Chapters (Note: grades 7-8) within Broward County. (amended March 31, 2004)
Section 2: A member school shall be defined as any school, which has paid its annual Broward County Honor Society dues. Only member schools are entitled to hold office and vote at the Broward County Honor Society convention.
Section 3: Beginning with the second semester of the 1989-1990 school year, minimum academic eligibility will be at least a 3.0 unweighted G.P.A. as defined by the member school’s grading policy. Induction proceedings for HS chapters must allow eligible students the opportunity to be inducted by the completion of their 10th grade year. Beginning with the first semester of the 2004-2005 school year, minimum academic eligibility will be at least 3.0 unweighted G.P.A. as defined by the NJHS member school’s grading policy. Induction proceedings for NJHS chapters must allow eligible students the opportunity to be inducted by the completion of their 6th grade year. (amended March 31, 2004)

Section 1: Annual dues for each member high school shall be fifty dollars ($50.00) and Twenty-Five dollars ($25.00) for each member middle school.
Section 2: No member chapter will be required to participate in any county chapter fund-raiser.
Section 3: Dues shall be paid to the treasurer school on or before November 30th. A late fee of ten dollars ($10.00) shall be assessed for any dues received after the due date.
Section 4: No member school may run for an office or vote during the election proceedings at the Broward County convention unless dues are paid by January 30th.

Section 3: An officer school not represented at, in excess of, three (3) regularly scheduled officer or county meetings can be considered guilty of nonfeasance and removed from office.

A. The President shall:
1. Preside at all Broward County Chapter meetings.
2. Appoint committees.
3. Call for meetings of the Broward County Chapter
4. Ensure the satisfactory performance of the officers to fulfill their duties in office.
5. Be responsible to the electorate as a representative of the Broward County Chapter.
6. Include in his/her Broward County Chapter Convention Address a statement
regarding the economic and communicative progress of the Broward County Chapter for the past year.
B. The Vice-President shall:
1. Assume total responsibility for the planning and execution of the Brain Brawl competition.
2. Preside at any meeting in the absence of the President.
3. Ensure the completion of responsibilities of all officers, particularly in the case of absence.
C. The Treasurer shall:
1. Assume responsibility, along with his or her advisor and principal, for all financial matters pertaining to the Broward County Honor Society.
2. Assume responsibility to inform all chapters of dues and financial due dates.
3. Balance the budget of the Broward County Chapter of the National Honor Society.
4. Aid in the execution and financial planning of the Broward County Chapter Convention.
D. The Recording Secretary shall:
1. Keep a permanent record of the minutes of each meeting.
2. Provide a copy of all minutes to all member schools within 10 days after the meeting.
E. The Corresponding Secretary shall:
1. Inform all member schools of upcoming events and meetings at most one week prior to the activity.
2. Be responsible for the Broward County Chapter Newsletter. This includes:
a. Gathering information and articles from member schools concerning chapters.
b. Drafting the newsletter.
c. The distribution of the newsletter to all member schools.
F. The Parliamentarian shall:
1. Be responsible for the execution of Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised over all meetings.
2. Be responsible for maintaining order at all events.
3. Ensure that all member schools are abiding by the rules and decisions made in the Broward County Chapter Constitution and By-laws.

Section 1: Any member school of the Broward County Honor Society may be considered for office if an intent-to-run letter, signed by the advisor and principal, is returned to the Broward Student Activities Office (via fax/pony/email) at least one week before convention.

Article X Amendments
Section 1: Amendments to this constitution may be proposed at a regular Broward County Chapter meeting and be addressed at the following Broward County Chapter meeting.
Section 2: Proposed amendments shall be ratified or rejected by a two-thirds (2/3) vote of each member schools’ members.

Broward County Honor Society By-laws
By-law 1: Each officer school is required to appoint an alternate for their position in the Broward County Honor Society. Both the actual officer and alternate officer will be required to attend all regular county meetings and officers’ meeting.
